Theories of Everything

"

Exploring theoretical physics (GUTs), consciousness, free will, and God.

“Theories of Everything Podcast”, hosted by the Torontonian filmmaker with a background in mathematical physics, Curt Jaimungal. The channel offers a unique exploration of the landscape of the so-called ‘Theories of Everything’, from various disciplines such as theoretical physics, philosophy of mind, pure math, linguistics, cognitive science, UFO phenomena, and really, many more.

ToE’s

The quest for a Theorie of Everything is represented by a world of ascending, sometimes paradoxical structures, whose multiplicity parallels that of the multiple ways in which finding a TOE has been attempted. The overall aspect of this scene is reminiscent of the platonic world with notes of Escher, surrealism, and mathematical realism, where a variety of simple geometrical forms serve as the building blocks of the represented reality. Taking a few exposures of Curt in different poses, the idea would be to place him both at the center of the scene and in some other locations, to somehow show him as an explorer, and at the same time, as a creator.  Along with this, by Curt being portrayed in multiple locations of an otherwise empty world, perhaps the image will also convey his solipsistic angst. Moreover, the ethereal, somewhat oniric aesthetics of the image may also be able to point to the idea that ultimate reality could be, in the end, a product of the mind at large. A ‘dream’.

Ripples of Mind

The nerdy depiction above could serve as the aesthetic basis for this creative portrait-photography project. Fully executed at our Galacpic Studio in southwest Montreal, the series comprises a number of instants that seek to convey the ineffable attraction of ‘fin de siecle’ decadence , with a sensible use of color, fashion, make-up, light, and scenery.

For the technically curious, the full lighting setup for these shots consisted of 3 speedlights mounted on a beauty dish as key light placed overhead, a strip box for the colored light one umbrella to fill from close to floor level, and a strip-gobo BG light. The camera body used was a Fujifilm X-T3, and the Fujinon 56 F1.2 was the lens of choice for most of the pictures. The whole shoot was done tethered to Capture 1, which greatly helps simplify the capture and review process.

In regards to the postproduction, the environment is full CGI, created and rendered in-house and then composited along with the raw plates using industry-standard compositing and image editing tools. Truly a blend of the timeless art of capturing photons on a camera obscura, along with really the latest, state-of-the-art digital techniques.
