What is colour?

The color of an object depends on the physics of the object in its environment, the physics of light in its environment, and the characteristics of the perceiving eye and brain. Physically, objects can be said to have the color of the light leaving their surfaces if it travels through the vacuum of space at speed c and does not pass through a physical medium such as a prism. The perceived color normally depends on the spectrum of the incident illumination, the wave velocity, the reflectance properties of the surface, and potentially on the angles of illumination and viewing

There is a reason why we see in colours

The sciency excerpts above could serve as the aesthetic basis for this creative portrait-photography project. Fully executed at our Galacpic Studio in southwest Montreal, the series comprises a number of exposures where color, fashion, make-up, lighting design, and negative space are played out.

For the technically curious, the full lighting setup consisted of 4 speedlights mounted on a beauty dish for the key light, two strip box rim lights, a BG light with various gobos plus one extra umbrella to fill from close to floor level. The camera body used was a Fujifilm X-T3, and the Fujinon 56mm F1.1 was the lens of choice for most of the pictures. The whole shoot was done tethered to Capture 1, which greatly helps simplify the capture and review process.
